Emmanuel Church Council 2009/10

Emmanuel United Church operates under a church council model. The members of the Council represent the church and make decisions and guide the work of the church. There are several committees that operate to do specific tasks, involving members of the congregation. The chairperson from each committee sits on the Council. Members are elected to the Council on a yearly basis at the Annual Meeting which is held in February.

The following persons are the Council for Emmanuel for this year.

Persons interested in the work of the Council can contact the chairperson by email or by leaving a message with the church secretary, or in person at church. All council members are open to discussion, ideas, questions and suggestions. All Council members have mailboxes at the church in Ottawa Hall and information or questions can be left in those mailboxes. The Council meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the church. Committee meeting dates vary and are typically listed in the weekly bulletin.

The work of the committees:

Christian Education: oversees the operation of the Sunday School and activities for the children and their families, ongoing Christian education activities such as Lenten study, advent preparation etc.

Finance Committee: oversees the financial planning, the financial statements and carrying out the financial projects and regular expenditures authorized by Council

Ministry and Personnel Committee: The Ministry and Personnel committee maintains contact with our church staff members, ensuring that staff members are in place to fill the approved positions and works to support the needs of the congregation.

Outreach Committee: oversees projects that extend the service of Emmanuel into our community. These projects include such things as food drives for the Downtown Mission, special speaker series, projects to assist community groups and projects aimed at larger world issues and mission projects.

Property Committee: The property committee oversees the upkeep of the church building and property. They ensure that any maintenance and repairs are completed and that any capital projects are coordinated and completed.

Worship Committee: oversees the preparation for regular worship services, the taping of services for persons unable to attend the regular service, pastoral care services and our hospitality committee.

The Trustees: The trustees oversee the property and investment decisions of the church.

Senior Representative : The Emmanuel Senior Women Group is a group of women that meet regularly. They have a rich history of work on behalf of Emmanuel and are dedicated to the support of our church community.

Youth Representative: A group of youth meet regularly at Emmanuel and undertake a variety of projects. Their voice on Council helps us to consider the needs of youth in the congregation and to see the future direction of Emmanuel.

Presbytery Representatives: The Presbytery is a regional group that attends to the needs of all the churches within our district. Each church has representatives that attend Presbytery to participate in the decision making process. Emmanuel United Church has two representatives that attend the meetings. There is a monthly report called Presbytery Highlights in the Emmanuel church bulletin.
